Walking with Jesus

What Jesus said about gratitude

One came back. He asked about the nine who did not.

Gratitude is the good feeling that evaporates fastest. Something goes right, relief arrives, and within a day it has become the new baseline — invisible, and no longer worth mentioning.

Noticing is the whole discipline. Not manufacturing a feeling you do not have, but naming what actually happened before it disappears into normal.

What Jesus said

Were there none found who returned to give glory to God, except this stranger?
Luke 17:18

Ten men with a skin disease were healed on their way to show themselves to the priest. One turned back to say thank you. Jesus' question about the other nine is not really about manners — it is about the difference between being relieved and being changed.

One thing to do today

Name one thing from today that went right and would have been easy not to notice. Say it out loud to the person involved, if there is one; write it down if there is not. Gratitude kept in your head fades. Gratitude that gets said tends to stay.

A prayer of thanks

Lord, thank you. For this one thing, by name, before I forget it and start expecting it. Amen.

Keep the ones that moved you

Walking with Jesus lets you save any teaching to a personal library and tag it in your own words, so the passage that met you on a good day is still there months later.

Questions people ask

What did Jesus say about gratitude?
After healing ten men, only one came back to thank him, and Jesus asked why the other nine had not (Luke 17:18). The account sets returning to give thanks apart from simply being relieved.
How do I actually become more grateful?
Name one specific thing rather than trying to feel generally thankful, and say it to someone. In Luke 17 the difference between the one and the nine is not a feeling — it is turning around and coming back.
